Annual/Torrance South Bay Compassionate Thanksgiving Program: Thanksgiving: This is our Annual Premier Event – through the City – I was personally involved with the Mayor in mobilizing the Faith Community to focus on collective social concerns and issues affecting the community – I initiated the South Bay Thanksgiving Event through the Faith Community as a way of addressing the basic needs of our underserved families in our disenfranchised communities – and Thanksgiving is an event the entire nation identifies with – this event was a major success because the various sectors of the communities heeded the call and responded with compassion by donating groceries and warm clothing, cooking turnkey meals and making cash donations to the event which was hosted on Thanksgiving Day – we were able to distribute over a 800 grocery bags – feed 300 people on site and our volunteers took cooked meals to feed the seniors and homeless in the South Bay. We also had fraternal service agencies on site displaying their range of community services available to the communities in need. Toyota is a key company that provided us with a number of resources – free access to their Museum for meetings and Events – and became the collection points for the Thanksgiving Event. This event laid the foundations future events because we had over 300 volunteers show up at the event.
